“Climate Dividends is an innovative mechanism to robustly trace companies' role in global decarbonisation when they remove or avoid emissions"

If you enable your customers to reduce their own CO2e emissions, you’re actively contributing to global decarbonisation as you remove or avoid emissions of CO2e.

Why should you only be assessed on your negative carbon footprint?

It’s essential to measure this positive impact in a standardised, transparent and robust way!

NB - the focus is only on CO2e emissions avoided (not on other critical ESG topics like social, biodiversity...etc).

How Climate Dividends work?

A simple 5-step process with continuous support from the Climate Dividends team.

1. Assess your Eligibility

  • At company level: you must have disclosed your carbon footprint (for SMEs) and a credible transition plan validated by science (for larger companies)
  • At Solution level, you must prove:
    • 1.5°C trajectory alignment - eligibility to the EU taxonomy or mention in the IPCC’s 6th Assessment Report (Working Group III)
    • Do No Significant Harm - no significant negative impact on other environmental objectives (e.g biodiversity preservation).
    • No direct link to fossil fuels exploration, extraction, mining and/or production, distribution or sales

2. Assess your removed or avoided emissions

In compliance with the Climate Dividends Protocol you’ll have to:

  • Define the relevant methodology
  • Collect the data
  • Compute removed or avoided emissions

You will have to formalize your methodological choices and underlying assumptions in a standard document called the “SDD” (Solution Detailed Declaration). It will constitute your Climate Dividends “claim”.

3. Get audited by an independent third-party

An independent third-party comes in to:

  • Validate the compliance of the methodology with the Climate Dividends Protocol
  • Verify the data and your removed or avoided emissions calculations

The 3rd-party is called a “VV” (Validator & Verificator) and is accredited by the Climate Dividends Association.

If everything’s in order, the VV will deliver a positive assurance statement. The Validation is given for 5 years and the Verification takes place every year.

4. Issue your Climate Dividends

After you receive the auditor’s positive statement:

  • We’ll log your claim into the Association’s public registry
  • The removed or avoided emissions are officially “converted” in Climate Dividends (1 tCO2e avoided/removed = 1 Climate Dividend)

Now, your company has officially issued its Climate Dividends for this year! 🎉

With the help of our dedicated resources and communication kits, you can communicate Climate Dividends:

  • In your official reporting (DPEF, CSRD, impact report…)
  • To the public, your employees and your stakeholders as robust proof of your contribution to global decarbonisation

5. Distribute your Climate Dividends

Finally, we edit “Distribution certificates”, splitting the total amount of Climate Dividends, to distribute it between your shareholders, up to their % of capital ownership. Learn more on the allocation rule in our Protocol
